IT Strategy

In the last decade, companies have spent large figures into Information Technology with the only one objective – to gain competitive advantage and support growth. To achieve the goal, however, companies should manage most IT for productivity and cost savings, but technologies that support businesses should be adopted and measured with the same decision-making process used for investments in general so that the IT investments help businesses to achieve a competitive advantage and to develop new, industry-changing operations.

Too often, companies design their IT strategies around what they are currently doing (existing assets, programs, and capabilities) and fail to focus on what they could/should be doing. The usual reason is that the starting point of the IT strategy process is improving current service levels and reducing the cost base. The alternative is for the leaders of business units and IT to base their strategies on their aspirations. Such strategies can be implemented in parallel with strategies for improving current capabilities but call for IT leaders who can work creatively with their business counterparts.

Fabrici Management Consulting sees the current situation in light of consequences and addresses the issues implied with Business-oriented IT Management approach:

First of all – it is the Business that drives the company and requires the IT to provide the support for various initiative and changes to be implemented. This dictates, however, the primary responsibility for the Requirements definition that comes from the Business Strategy decomposition (Products, Services, and Business Processes). This requires the IT Leaders to understand the Business and support the Business Departments recognizing the complex interrelationship of Business ending in the IT.

Secondly – IT can’t improve the services provided to Business unless transparently mapped and measured against the Business Requirements. The only correct way of mapping the Business onto the IT is via Business Processes. The Business Process is an entity that strictly dictates the Requirements for flows, control and the content of activities within the Business Process. Only well defined and decomposed Business Process could be mapped on the IT Systems (Applications and Data).

Thirdly – after mapping and measurement of IT services according to Business Processes analyzed and modeled the IT & Business Leaders can define the Targeted state of the Business and IT co-operation and the process of improvements of the IT services provided to the Business. The IT strategy could be then aligned and justified to the Business needs while assuring the right way of spending the IT budget.
